Celebrity promises for 2011

Learn how celebrities are planning to live more sustainably

Ben Elton is one of many celebrities to make a sustainable promise

We have been speaking to some well-known names about their own New Years resolution. The response has been fantastic, as you can see below. Why not use these ideas to create your own sustainable promise?

Alys Fowler

"I promise to use my library more.  I love books but I do not need to own all that I need to read. I love my library and I get the feeling that it needs to me show that support a bit more. I also need to read more so it seems a perfect solution."

Alistair McGowan

"I promise to switch to solar power!"

Jackie Brambles

"I promise to insulate our attic and fit draught excluders to all doors."

Ben Elton

"I promise to carry on composting, cycling and recycling and also to let my frayed and greying collection of underpants go another year without replacing them."

Alan Titchmarsh

"I promise to start cycling again and avoid using the car for local journeys.  Anyway, you can get a better view into folks' gardens from a bike!"

Livia Firth, creative director of Eco Age

"I promise I will try to buy only fresh food with no packaging and become an expert in "recycled delicatessen" learning to use anything in my fridge to minimize waste."

Hugh Dennis

"I promise that if my name is in lights, they will be low voltage ones."

Deborah Meaden

''I promise to give the oceans a break and not to eat fish for a year.''

Jasmine Birtles

"I promise to eat half the amount of meat I usually eat. I don't think I can become completely vegetarian but increasingly I realise that the world cannot sustain a carnivorous diet, particularly as the developing world is eating more meat and putting even more pressure on available land. Adults don't need the amount of meat we tend to eat in the West. It's just a habit we get into so I am determined to change my eating habits to more sustainable ones!"

Penny Smith

"I promise to use my car less and sing more. Conserving fossil fuel, while possibly destroying eardrums...."

Carol Drinkwater

"I promise to eat more raw food especially the vegetables grown in the garden at our olive farm. (Less energy used for cooking and extra-good for my health!)"

Marcus Brigstocke

"I promise that whenever possible I will eat seasonal, local food. Experience has shown it is often delicious. Though this does depend on the season and your locality. Ooh and I'm switching to a green mobile phone network... It launches in 2011."

George Clarke

"I promise to use energy saving light bulbs in my home and to switch off the lights whenever I leave the room...also recycle more and use my car less."

Diane-Louise Jordan

"I promise to walk when popping into town.  That way I reduce my carbon footprint at the same time as firming up my buttocks and getting a fabulous pair of legs!"

Kirstie Allsopp

"I promise to curtain all the windows in the house and to drawer them when it gets dark."

Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu

"In 2011, the Diocese of York will be celebrating the Year of the Environment. A bird box has been sent to every church and church school across the area. Whether you decide to use a bicycle instead of cars, or put up your bird box in your churchyards to increase biodiversity, you can make such a difference!"

Kevin McCloud

"I promise to insulate my old listed home with Hemcrete, reedboard and a clutch of other unusual materials and to insulate myself with another pullover."
