We can all make simple changes in our everyday lives that will help us live more sustainably. One of the simplest changes we can make is to start using water wisely.

Precious resource

Water is an extremely precious resource that we all take for granted. The truth is, we all need to do more to conserve it.

Despite the UK's "rainy" reputation, we don't have limitless  supplies - in fact, many parts are classed as water stressed. This means there is a risk of not being able to meet  the demand for water.

UK water companies are already preparing for this. They are investing in their networks to reduce leaks and improve their ability to move water around their regions so they are less dependent on localised weather conditions.

They are also identifying new supply sources like desalination, which takes water from a tidal river and turns it into drinking water.

Reduce your bills

The  UK,  on average, uses 150 litres per person per day. This is much more than many of our European neighbours - Germany's average consumption is 127 litres per day. We can easily reduce our consumption to around 130 litres of water a day, without having to make any dramatic changes to our lifestyle.

Water also requires electricity to treat it, pump to your homes, schools and workplaces, where more energy is used to heat it. So by using it wisely, you can reduce carbon and your utility bills.

By starting to use water wisely now, we can help protect our future supplies, the environment from which we take it, and reduce the carbon associated with its production and transportation.

Local water companies

Local water companies are also playing their part by reducing leakage, increasing the amount of renewable energy they produce and encouraging employees and business customers to use water wisely at home and work.
